There’s a particular energy at a Poodle specialty that’s hard to put into words—a quiet buzz, a current of anticipation, and a collective focus unlike any other show. Today, in the Toy variety ring, that atmosphere was accompanied by a moment that drew attention: three Toy Poodles were excused after being measured and found to exceed the maximum height per the AKC breed standard.
This process—measuring with a tool called the wicket—is standard procedure in Toy and Miniature Poodles. While not typically used in the Standard variety, it plays a critical role in maintaining the distinctions between size varieties, which are an essential part of Poodle breed structure in the United States.
Understanding the Wicket
The wicket is a U-shaped measuring device used to assess the height of a dog at the highest point of the shoulders (the withers). According to the AKC Poodle breed standard:
• Toy Poodles must be 10 inches or under
• Miniature Poodles must be over 10 inches and up to 15 inches
• Standard Poodles are over 15 inches
If a dog appears close to the size limit, judges have the discretion to use the wicket to verify height. This is most often seen in the Toy and Miniature rings. In today’s case, all three dogs moved in the ring and were initially evaluated before the judge chose to measure. This is not unusual and falls within accepted judging protocol.
Under AKC Rules, Policies, and Guidelines for Conformation Events, a dog may only be measured once per event per day. In other words, once the wicket comes out and the dog is measured, that’s it for the day—no second chances in that event. If the dog is entered in a separate event—such as a concurrent or evening specialty—it may be measured again in that distinct competition.
Being excused after measuring over is not considered a disqualification. It simply means that the dog does not meet the breed variety requirements at that time, under that judge, in that event. The measurement stands for the day and is final within that context.
A Breed of Variety and Vision
One of the most remarkable things about a Poodle specialty is the diversity you see—not just in coat colors and trims, but in expression, outline, movement, and the interpretation of type. From elegant outlines to bold personalities, from the tiniest Toys to commanding Standards, specialties celebrate the full spectrum of this intelligent and versatile breed.
The variety ring, in particular, offers a fascinating glimpse into the subtle distinctions that make each size unique, yet unified by the same standard. The care and attention that breeders, handlers, and owners bring to the ring is evident in every presentation. Even if you’ve been in Poodles for decades, you’ll still spot something new—an outline, a headpiece, a moment on the move.
Looking Ahead
Today may have brought some unexpected moments, but the atmosphere remains focused, respectful, and forward-looking. The beauty of a specialty is that it continues—each day offering a fresh opportunity to celebrate the breed and witness the best of what dedicated breeders and owners have cultivated.
Tomorrow brings the excitement of the Bitches classes, always a highlight in the variety ring. These entries often reflect the heart of breeding programs and the promise of future generations. The depth and quality seen in the bitch classes is consistently impressive and a joy to watch.
As we move through this week of celebration, competition, and community, let’s hold onto the spirit that brought us all here: a shared passion for the Poodle, a deep respect for the standard, and an appreciation for the generations of work that go into every dog presented.
Here’s to more great dogs and a strong showing tomorrow 🙌✨
