The Courage to Change What Should Be Changed

They say everything happens for a reason, and throughout my own journey, I have often found that to be true, although there have been seasons when the reason seemed impossible to find. Some experiences eventually revealed their purpose, while others still leave me wondering what I failed to see, which angle I did not consider, or what lesson God is asking me to understand.

This uncertainty is especially difficult for someone like me because I have never been comfortable simply accepting what does not make sense. My nature is to search deeper, ask difficult questions, study what others take for granted, and look beyond conventional explanations. That instinct has shaped nearly every part of my life, from the way I care for my dogs and approach natural rearing to the way I view health, breeding, responsibility, relationships, faith, and my own personal struggles.

Still, not every answer arrives when I need it. Some losses, disappointments, betrayals, and unexpected turns have remained unexplained far longer than I thought I could bear. Time has sometimes brought clarity, but it has also taught me that acceptance does not always mean understanding. Occasionally, the lesson is learning to live faithfully without having every answer and trusting that God can see the whole picture when I cannot.

I often return to the original wording of the Serenity Prayer:

“God give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

The words “should be changed” speak deeply to me because they carry a sense of moral responsibility. They remind me that acceptance is not the same as silence, surrender, or indifference. Some circumstances are beyond my control and must be placed in God’s hands, but others require courage, truth, and action, even when speaking or acting comes with a personal cost.

My journey has never been about following the easiest or most accepted path. It has been about remaining faithful to what I believe is right, questioning systems that no longer serve the animals or people they were meant to protect, defending principles that are becoming inconvenient, and continuing to learn even when that knowledge forces me to make difficult changes in my own life.

Perhaps I will eventually understand why certain things happened. Perhaps some answers will remain hidden from me. Either way, I do not intend to sit quietly waiting for every mystery to resolve itself. I will work on accepting what truly cannot be changed, find the courage to confront what should be changed, and pray for the wisdom to recognize the difference. ❤️🐾❤️
